Korean BBQ Heidekrug, Oberursel

Thirty kilometers northwest of Frankfurt, on the slopes of the Taunus mountains, is the charming town of Oberursel.  Here you will find the Korean BBQ restaurant Heidekrug, popular amongst members of the Korean community in the Frankfurt Rhein-Main region.

From the outside, Heidekrug looks like a typical German Biergarten.  However, as soon as you step inside the restaurant, you will see it is a proper Korean eatery – complete with tables with built-in grill pits, fired with buckets of charcoal.  There are even TVs screening Korean channels in the indoor dining areas.  They have an outdoor kitchen as well, where food can be grilled over charcoal fire.

The menu is extensive – seasonal recommendations, meats for charcoal BBQ, grilled meats, seafood, soups, noodles… The dishes we ordered tasted as authentic as can be, and banchan (6 different types) are refilled for free, as how it should be.  Prices are on the high end – for example, appetizers range between 10 and 20 Euro per portion (10 Mandu costs 12 Euro, Haemul Pajeon seafood pancake costs 20 Euro), and a portion of meat for BBQ starts from 28 Euro per person.  Plan for at least 100 Euro for a good meal for two persons.

Korean BBQ Heidekrug, Oberursel: The Verdict

We were very satisfied with the quality of the food we had – the delicately-flavoured Mandu and colorful Haemul Pajeon whetted our appetite for more.  We were not disappointed – the Yangnyeom Jumuluk and Yangnyeom Galbi we ordered tasted amazing!  At the end of the meal, guests are offered a complimentary cup of Sujeonggwa, a traditional dessert drink of red dates and cinnamon which cleanses the palate.

We look forward to returning, to try the other dishes on the menu.  Outdoor dining is available on the patio (portable tabletop grills used for cooking at the table), and in warm months, guests can enjoy a Biergarten atmosphere in the spacious garden.  If only Heidekrug was closer to us in the Rhine Neckar region!  It is open for lunch from 12.00-14.30 (lunch menu available), and for dinner from 18.00-22.30.  They close on Mondays.
