Located in the heel of Italy’s boot, Puglia’s sun-drenched fertile plains get plenty of sun and sea breeze – agriculture is most important here. With such rich bounty from its land, it is no wonder Puglia is famous for the variety and abundance of its fruits and vegetables.

Our first Dinner Expedition of the season introduces us to the food of Puglia, prepared by the owner of Piccolo Mondo, Mr Angelo Pizzulli. Mr Pizzulli is a native of the region, and he is pleased to present the following 3-course vegetarian menu inspired by “cucina povera”.

When: Saturday, 17th September 2016 starting from 1900 hours

Where: Ristorante Piccolo Mondo, Klingenteichstraße 6, 69117 Heidelberg

What: We start with appetizers – carefully chosen to balance flavours and textures, simple with complex, raw with cooked. Choose either “Antipasto di verdure” made with seasonal vegetables, or “Parmigiana di Melanzane” (aubergine parmesan) to whet your appetite.

For “Primi Piatti”, we get to try two pasta dishes. The first is Puglia’s signature dish, “Orecchiette con cime di rapa” – pasta cooked with turnip greens. Simple in the extreme but absolutely delicious! Up next is “Pasta ceci” – pasta cooked with chickpeas, the ultimate comfort food from Italy’s south.

For our main course, indulge in “Lasagne ai carciofi” (lasagne with artichokes).   The artichoke is one of Puglia’s main produce.  It’s technically not a vegetable but the bud of a flowering plant from the thistle family.   It may appear intimidating, but properly prepared, the artichoke is a delectable treat!

Piccolo Mondo offers a wide selection of Italian wines, including whites and reds from Puglia. Mr Pizzulli would be pleased to assist you with choosing something to complement your Puglian experience.

There are 20 seats available for the Food Explorers. The menu costs 32 Euro per person (food only). Non-members pay 37 Euro per person.

Deadline for registration is Friday, September 9th, 2016. Please make your payment online by then in order to secure your seats. You may pay for your drinks at the restaurant.
