In 2024, the Lao and Thai communities celebrate their New Year – “Pi Mai” for the Lao, “Songkran” for the Thai – on April 13th.
There is a Buddhist monastery in Altlussheim, Wat Sibounheuang Theravada e.V., which is the only monastery in Germany run by Laotian monks. This monastery is the gathering point for Theravada Buddhists from all over Germany so Pi Mai Lao festivities draw a huge crowd.
When: Sunday, April 14th, starting at 9.30am till about 10.30am thereabouts
Where: Wat Sibounheuang Theravada, Benzstrasse 5-11, 68804 Altlussheim
What: Many stalls will be set up opposite the temple grounds selling a wide variety of Thai and Lao food specialties. I will be your guide on the various Southeast Asian food items on sale. This is a great opportunity to stock up your pantry! Be sure to bring enough cash to pay for your purchases.
