The Bitzel family has been farming in Hirschberg since the 18th century. In the 1980’s, they decided to focus on growing fruits. Today, they specialize in apples (> 20 varieties), pumpkins (150 varieties) and artichokes on approximately 35 hectares of land. Another 6 hectares are reserved for wine grapes – Spätburgunder, Weißburgunder and Riesling varieties.
In 2012, the family added a farm shop and a café & bakery to their name. Open Mondays to Saturdays, their daily breakfast buffet is very popular (0800-1130 hours). Breads are made-from-scratch just like they used to be back in the olden days, freshly baked daily in a wood oven. The cakes are brought out around ten o’clock in the morning – the chocolate cake is very popular as it always seems to be the first to sell out! Over at the farm shop, there are apples and fresh apple juice, pumpkins, a few other types of fruits and vegetables, cold cuts, wild game meats, homemade jams, a small selection of wines, fresh pasta, amongst others.
Another highlight is the combined petting zoo-and-playground area for young kids. The entire area is enclosed, so parents can relax and enjoy their cuppa while kids roam and play. Judging from how packed the place was on a Monday afternoon, Bitzel Obsthof is a popular hangout for families with young children and senior citizens alike.
