It was a weekday during summer holidays, and we felt like dining out. The kids wanted pizza, but my husband and I felt like having something “proper”, so we decided to give Heid’s in Heidelberg a try. We figured it being relatively early on a weekday, we wouldn’t need a reservation. All tables in the outdoor dining area were already allocated, but we got a decent table indoors. The menu features a good variety of dishes – steaks, fish & seafood, tapas, soups, salads, pasta, pizza, vegetarian – there is something for everyone. The kids got their pizza (fresh from a wood oven), and we enjoyed our steaks (perfectly-cooked on a charcoal grill). A simple scoop of ice cream rounded the meal off nicely.
As it was a weeknight and we were driving, we decided to order our wines by the glass. Initially, we wanted to order a Rioja, but Alexander, our server, suggested we go for either the Argentinian Malbec or the French Chimères as he thought the Rioja would be overwhelmed by our steaks. He was right – the Chimères complemented our steaks perfectly – thumbs up Alexander!
There is a small play area for children to amuse themselves, but we didn’t have to wait long before our pizza and steaks were brought out. Service is generally prompt, food is good and the atmosphere is cozy. The only issue we note is parking – there is only space for around 15 cars on the premises, additional parking is available about 250 meters down the road. So either go early, or take public transport.
We are happy with our first meal at Heid’s, and we plan to return (with an appetite) for the “Chuleton” next! Be sure to reserve a table if you plan to eat there.
